KRISTIN FLESCHNER

2004-05 Traveling Fellow
A Journey to Africa:
Exploring Women's Rights

An investigation into issues of violence against women in Africa

Majors: Human and Organizational Development & Anthropology

Kristin was a passionate advocate, a determined adventurer, and an inspiring individual. Despite living with severe type 1 diabetes, she never allowed it to define her – not during her Keegan Fellowship nor after.

Following her Keegan Fellowship, Kristin dedicated her life to advocating for marginalized communities. She worked in various roles, from combating human trafficking to advising on African political matters and leadership, to shaping U.S. policy and support for LGBTI individuals globally.

While a student at Harvard Law School, Kristin’s diabetes led to declining vision and eventual blindness. Undeterred, she became deeply involved in disability rights and advocacy for students with disabilities on campus.

After graduating, she became a professional speaker, inspiring others to reach for their dreams through her personal story. Kristin also worked as an attorney and was an accomplished para-cyclist, competing in multiple National Championships.

Kristin passed away in March 2024, and she will always be remembered as one of the most extraordinary individuals to have walked the Keegan path. Though she is no longer with us, her work, her spirit, and her dedication continue to inspire the Keegan community and beyond.

“The Fellowship taught me that I could find happiness and independence in any situation.”

TRAVEL STORY

“I was fortunate to live with a black, Afrikaans, and, Indian, and “colored” families in South Africa. This gave me a unique perspective on race relations in the country and what this meant for women. I was also fortunate to meet Archbishop Tutu and President Mandela, who offered their support and networks to ensure that I had a fruitful experience.”
